Dates are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and have been a staple food in the Middle East for thousands of years.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the dates with hot water and let them soak for 10 minutes. Drain and chop the dates.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Fold in the chopped dates.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Serve the date cake as is or with a dusting of powdered sugar.
