  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the dates and boiling water. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the bran flakes, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the date mixture into the butter mixture and mix well. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the chopped walnuts.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
