Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat.

Pour the butter and sugar mixture into the prepared cake pan. Spread it evenly to cover the bottom.

Arrange the fresh cranberries over the butter and sugar mixture.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until well combined.

Pour the batter over the cranberries in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
