Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and stir until dissolved. Add cranberries and cook for 5 minutes, until they burst. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together 1/4 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with milk. Pour the cranberry mixture into the greased cake pan, then arrange sliced pears on top.

Pour the cake batter over the cranberries and pears, spreading it evenly.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
