  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the Cortland apples.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  4. Add the butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  5. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange half of the sliced apples on top. Repeat with the remaining batter and apples.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
