  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a muffin tin or line with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and chopped nuts (if using).
  6. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cup about 2/3 full.
  7. Sprinkle the brown sugar and nut mixture on top of each muffin.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the muffins cool in the tin for 5 minutes.
  10. Transfer the muffins to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
