  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a 20cm (8-inch) round cake tin.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.
  4. Sift in the flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder, then fold gently to combine.
  5. Add the chopped dates and milk, then mix well until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Meanwhile, make the toffee sauce by gently heating the double cream, golden syrup, and dark chocolate in a saucepan until melted and well combined.
  8. Once the cake is baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
  9. Poke holes in the cake using a skewer, then pour half of the warm toffee sauce over the cake.
