  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and pour over the dry ingredients. Mix well.
  4. Stir in buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the dish for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk to make the glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake.
  9. Sprinkle with chopped nuts, if desired.
  10. Cut into squares and serve.
