Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
