Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate. Let it sit for 1 minute, then whisk until smooth.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of chocolate ganache on top. Repeat with the remaining layers.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice to make the glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the top of the cake.
  10. Garnish with orange slices, if desired. Serve and enjoy!
