Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions and divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the orange zest.
  4. In another bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, orange extract, and orange food coloring until stiff peaks form. Gently fold this mixture into the cream cheese mixture.
  5. Place one cooled chocolate cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of the cream cheese mixture over the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake layers and cream cheese mixture.
  6. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Stir in the orange juice and orange liqueur. Drizzle the chocolate mixture over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  7. Refrigerate the cake for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow it to set.
  8. Before serving, decorate the cake with whipped cream and orange slices, if desired.
  9. Enjoy!
