  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
  5. Fold in the maraschino cherries.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
