  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. To make the ganache frosting, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat and add the chocolate. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth. Add the butter and powdered sugar, and stir until well combined.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of ganache frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining ganache frosting.
  9. Let the cake sit for at least 1 hour to allow the ganache to set. Serve and enjoy!
