  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just blended.
  5. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar and decorate with whipped cream and fresh berries if desired.
  9. Slice and serve.
