Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the vegetable oil, applesauce, vanilla extract, vinegar, and water. Stir until well combined.
