Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.

Fold in cherry pie filling and chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, spread whipped cream on top of the cake and garnish with maraschino cherries if desired.
