Chocolate-Candy Cane Cake
Candy canes were originally straight, white sticks of sugar candy. The red and white striped candy canes became popular in the 20th century.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a cake pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just blended.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled, spread whipped cream over the top and sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
