Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, beat together egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Add to the flour mixture and stir until just combined.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan. Top with cherries.

In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and sliced almonds. Sprinkle half of the mixture over the cherries.

Spread the remaining batter over the cherries and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar mixture.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
