  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest, beating until well combined and creamy.
  8. Once the cakes have cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  9. Allow the cake to rest for at least 1 hour before serving. Enjoy!
