Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday in many countries as a symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus.

In the bread machine pan, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, milk, butter, and egg.

Select the dough setting and start the machine.

Once the dough is ready, remove it from the machine and place it on a lightly floured surface.

Knead in the raisins.

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

Place the balls on a greased baking sheet, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for about 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and water to make the glaze.

Using a sharp knife, carefully make a cross on the top of each bun.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the buns cool on a wire rack.

Once the buns are cool, drizzle the glaze over the crosses.
