Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk, mixing just until incorporated. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until steaming. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, egg yolks, granulated sugar, and salt. Gradually whisk the hot cream into the egg mixture, then return the mixture to the saucepan.
  7. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the unsalted butter and vanilla extract. Allow the custard to cool completely.
  8. Once the cakes and custard are cooled, spread the custard evenly over one cake layer. Top with the second cake layer.
  9. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate and unsalted butter in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Stir in the powdered sugar until well combined.
  10. Pour the chocolate glaze over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
