  1. In a saucepan, combine the dates and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a cake pan.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the cooled date mixture, vegetable oil, brown sugar, and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Stir in the chopped walnuts.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Transfer the cake to a wire rack and let it cool completely.
