Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg whites, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and let cool completely on wire racks.
