  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Slice the blood oranges into thin rounds and remove any seeds.
  3. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until melted and smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.
  4. Arrange the blood orange slices on top of the sugar mixture in the pan.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. In a large bowl, cream together the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Gradually mix in the flour mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  8. Pour the batter over the blood orange slices in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
