  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the caramel sauce over the top, then sprinkle with half of the chopped pecans. Spread half of the whipped cream over the pecans.
  10. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the layers of caramel sauce, chopped pecans, and whipped cream.
  11. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving.
