In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth. Add the bran flakes, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, egg, vanilla extract, and milk. Pour the wet ingredients into the banana mixture and stir until just combined. If desired, fold in the walnuts.

Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin pan, filling each cup about 2/3 full.
