  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir into the flour mixture until just blended.
  4. Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan. Spread apricot preserves over the batter. Drop remaining batter by spoonfuls over the preserves. Sprinkle with sliced almonds.
  5. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. Once cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
