  2. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into thin slices.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Add the eggs and vanilla sugar, and mix well.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk.
  5. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange half of the apple slices on top, then sprinkle with half of the almonds.
  6. Repeat with the remaining batter, apple slices, and almonds.
  7. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
