In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the applesauce. Fold in the chopped walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
