Peel and core the apples, then slice them into thin rounds.

Arrange the apple slices on top of the brown sugar and butter mixture in the cake pan.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

In another bowl, cream together the remaining butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
