  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just blended.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread caramel sauce on top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top and spread caramel sauce over the entire cake.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour to allow the caramel to set.
  10. Before serving, garnish with whipped cream and caramel candies if desired.
